Homework at Courthouse Green

Purpose

Home learning is designed to give children the chance to practise and consolidate skills they are developing in school. Regular reading, spelling, and maths fluency tasks help strengthen core knowledge, while the half-termly project encourages children to apply skills in a creative and meaningful way, supporting independence, confidence, and a love of learning.

  • Spelling Practice – Children receive a set of spelling words each week to learn and practise at home using their RWI sounds and the portal or spelling shed.

  • Maths Fluency – Weekly focus on times tables or number fluency to build quick and accurate recall.

  • Reading – Pupils are expected to read at home at least five times a week, recorded in their reading log.

  • Half-Termly Project – Each half term, children complete a creative project linked to their current topic or theme, encouraging research, creativity, and independent learning.

At Courthouse Green, we believe that reading is a crucial skill in life that all children must develop. We make it out aim that all children go home with a paper based book and appropriately banded reading book each week, as well as providing access to MyON for all children from Year 1 to 6.

MyON is a digital reading platform that provides students with 24/7 access to thousands of fiction and non-fiction books in English, Spanish and additional languages.  A multimedia reading experience with colourful illustration, professionally recorded audio and annotation tools makes each text engaging and unique.  Built-in close reading tools, customisable projects and a large collection of non-fiction titles.  These texts can be read for pleasure, or chosen at the appropriately banded level following in-school assessments.  Quizzes are accessible for each text using the Accelerated Reader login.  Home reading is tracked by teachers weekly; it is the expectation that all children will read at home at least three times per week plus several times a day in class.
